Parents Pay Tribute to Dentist Son Slain in El Cajon Shooting
EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — A tragic incident unfolded at an El Cajon dental clinic, where a former patient allegedly entered last week, resulting in the shooting of three employees, one of whom, a young dentist, tragically lost his life. The accused, Mohammed Abdul kareem, 29, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of murder and attempted murder.
The victim, 28-year-old dentist Benjamin Harouni, was fatally shot, while two other employees sustained injuries. Abdul kareem, believed to be a disgruntled former patient, reportedly fired at least 23 rounds during the incident. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment.
Benjamin’s parents, Jack and Hilda Harouni, are devastated by the loss of their son. Described as a compassionate and intelligent individual with a dedication to serving underserved communities, Benjamin’s tragic death has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew him.
Graduating from the University of Southern California and the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry at the University of the Pacific, Benjamin worked alongside his father at Smile Plus Dentistry. His parents remember him not just as their son but also as their friend and partner. The impact of his absence is immeasurable, leaving his family grappling with grief and disbelief.
Despite their anguish, Benjamin’s parents aim to honor his memory by promoting peace and kindness in the community. They emphasize Benjamin’s commitment to helping others and encourage acts of kindness as a way to perpetuate his legacy.
While initial investigations suggest that the shooting was not racially or religiously motivated, prosecutors pledge to thoroughly explore all angles. Benjamin’s parents express faith in the justice system and urge the community to support their efforts to seek justice for their son.
In memory of Benjamin, the family has established a GoFundMe page to establish a foundation in his honor. The foundation aims to provide support and counseling to families affected by violent crimes, particularly those who lack access to necessary resources.
